Functional Lab Testing

About Functional Lab Testing

Functional lab testing provides deeper insight into the biological factors that influence hormone balance, metabolism, and overall wellness. When symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, or mood fluctuations occur, routine lab work may not always provide the full picture.

At Twin Ports Telemedicine, Nikki Shockley, APRN, FNP-BC uses targeted functional testing to better understand hormone patterns, metabolic health, and other factors affecting midlife wellness. These insights help guide personalized treatment strategies designed to address the root causes of symptoms.

Functional medicine services are provided through telehealth, allowing patients throughout licensed states to receive expert guidance from the comfort of home.

Functional Lab Testing Q&A

What is functional lab testing?

Functional lab testing looks beyond basic screening labs to evaluate how different systems in the body are working together. These tests can provide more detailed information about hormone metabolism, nutrient status, gut health, and metabolic function.

This approach allows treatment plans to be more individualized and focused on the underlying drivers of symptoms rather than simply managing symptoms alone.

Types of testing that may be used

Depending on symptoms and health history, testing may include:

• hormone evaluation
• metabolic markers
• gut microbiome analysis
• nutritional markers
• toxin or environmental exposure markers

Not every patient requires testing. When used, testing is selected based on each individual’s symptoms, goals, and clinical needs.
